Biography

Education & Experience:

Alastair Callender has done his Boat Design degree, from Coventry University, UK, achieving First Class Honours with professional enhancement and Boat Designer of the Year Award.

Alastair grew up a stone’s throw away from his sailing club in Chichester Harbour which in turn, has nurtured an absolute passion for all things nautical for as long as he can remember.

At the age of 16, Alastair was incredibly fortunate to have a life-changing careers talk from one of the world’s most renowned Superyacht designers, Andrew Winch. This fuelled Alastair with a thirst to pursue a personal ambition: to work within this sector of the maritime industry.

He won the Sir Peter Blake Award for achievement in sailing, before teaching this sport for 6 months in Sivota, Greece, for a British active holiday company.

Alastair managed to secure invaluable work experience at the Andrew Winch Designs office in London, prior to commencing a 4 year Bachelor of Arts degree at Coventry University in the United Kingdom.

As part of the penultimate year of his degree course, Alastair had the opportunity to apply for a 6 month professional enhancement placement. He was the only student out of 150 on the course to be selected. This took him to Plymouth, United Kingdom, to work alongside the design team at Princess Yachts International plc.

Alastair subsequently has several of his designs incorporated into the production of the Princess Yachts International range of motorboats.

He has also worked in the design studio at Northshore Yachts Limited in Chichester Harbour, giving him a well rounded first-hand experience of the sailing and motor yacht design industries.

Initially inspired by the environmental work of the late Sir Peter Blake, Alastair has developed an exciting, innovative design for the world’s most environmentally friendly superyacht. He has worked with Solar Sailor Holdings Limited – a cutting-edge, high-tech Australian company that has developed patented solarsail technology which harnesses renewable sun and wind energy and integrated hybrid electric technologies, for use in ferries.

" Solar Sailor was proud to sponsor Alastair’s project and incorporate its technologies . into his new design – the “supergreen superyacht.”

Dr. Robert Dane, CEO, Solar Sailor Ltd.

This Superyacht design was showcased during Alastair’s speech at "The 4th Annual Future of Superyachts" conference in Mallorca, in June 2009, entitled: "The Design of Supergreen Superyachts".

At the 6th Annual Green Ship Technology conference, which took place in Hamburg, in March 2009, another of Alastair’s unique design projects was revealed.

“The future in the Superyacht design world is incredibly exciting, as the industry adapts and meets the challenges of the global economy, the Green agenda and the ever shifting ‘wish-list’ catering to the whims of discerning buyers”.
